Colorado Democrats and Republicans had the opportunity to pick their party's candidate for various Congressional and State races across Colorado on Tuesday. I was at 9News throughout last night, plugging in updated results whenever possible on 9News and My20. It was definitely an interesting experience...a roller coaster of "crap! No change!" to "crap! My results ticker is down!"
There were also some surprises. The first big surprise was my boss's sheer enthusiasm for the sport of figuring out who's winning and where. When results were rolling in on County websites, he was alternately cheering for updated numbers, bashing slow counties, and putting predictions down on winners. When things slowed down, he was antsy.
His big prediction lead to the other surprise of the night: Jared Polis, a Democrat running in my home-district against two other Dems, was not pegged as the winner. He was running against a prominant Colorado Democrat who has had high positions in the State House and is well known throughout the 2nd CD. The shocker? Even though my numbers were barely showing a quarter of the precincts reporting with her 4 points behind, she conceded. The race was Jared's for the taking. Later numbers showed he did hold on to the lead.
In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Secretary of State Mike Coffman took the Republican primary in the 6th CD. He handedly defeated three other Republicans for the title of candidate, now running officially to fill the seat Tom Tancredo will be vacating.
And, despite his apparent popularity, Doug Bruce did not hold on to his State House seat.
Outside of politics, the Olympics were on last night. The American gymnasts could have had a better night; men's volleyball did well; and well, Michael Phelps scored his 4th and 5th Gold Medals of the 2008 games by winning a butterfly race and a relay. They were great events, and Phelps was easily in the lead during his stretch.
He had some issues with his goggles in one of the races; water was getting into the goggles and it impaired his sight. Although he won the race, and broke a record in the process, he said he was "frustrated" and "could have done better." Oh, Michael Phelps. It's ok, because, as Bob Costas said, as if there were any question, "Michael Phelps can do it with his eyes closed."
My boss kept a running blog of results and random notes throughout last night, which are amusing. Check out the Primary Election Blogs in "Adam's Rib" on 9News.com.
